SAXY SITAR
This song is a dialogue between sitar, bass and saxophone set in a quick rhythm tempo of 7 beat cycles, perhaps unusual for a rock song, because the resulting song creates a powerful 4/4 groove which upon analyses in is actually occurring in a 7 beat cycle. sitar, bass and saxophone set in a quick rhythm tempo of 7 beat cycles, perhaps unusual for a rock song, because the resulting song creates a powerful 4/4 groove which upon analyses in is actually occurring in a 7 beat cycle.

THE MAHAMAYA EXPERIENCE: Of Pure Bliss and Musical Transcendence

A glimpse of culture and the musical works of Mahamaya.

The Mahamaya Experience, Mahamaya for short, accords a set of experimental musical works created by sitar player and composer Ranjit “Mahamaya” Makkuni. Ranjit is also a leading multimedia designer and researcher who is now bringing the expertise from a diversity of visual composition to Mahamaya’s musical works.

The band’s creations highlight a full rhythmical gymnastic experience fusing classical style to infectious raga, kirtana and Balinese mallet beats and percussions spanning from opera, funk, pop rock to classical Asian music genres. The music is so diverse that it also touches upon Asian models of ‘psychedelic’ movements popularized in the 1960s by various visual and musical artists.

“The term Mahamaya usually refers to the concept of illusionary, impermanent nature of worldly attachments, and this idea forms a core symbolism of the Goddess traditions in India and other Buddhist representations in Asia,” band founder Ranjit Makkuni says in an interview.

With a distinct showcase of genuine musical ability that do not even demand grandiose lyrics to be perceived and be felt, every composition will take you back to a deeper understanding of the role of spirituality in a world wrecked by the increasing rational determinism of individuals. The band will take you coursing through a transcendental river amidst the chaos of complex human activities and inequities. Moreover, it will get you celebrating multiple facets of culture in the most pleasurable way possible.

Relevant, innovative and timely. The Mahamaya Experience’s music depicts what the world needs at this certain point in time: the oscillating, alternative pause as you continuously drift towards a possibility of myriad decisions in your life — without you losing sight of reality and with you entering euphoric panoramas at the same time.

Ranjit Makkuni delivers rhythmic gymnastics across his ferocious single, ‘Saxy Sitar’.

Epitomising the experimental and diverse nature of the Mahamaya Experience, Ranjit Makkuni’s noteworthy contributions have consistently evoked feelings of certitude and contentment.
Combining the mystical sounds of Southeast Asia with contemporary Western influences, his progressive attitude has frequently introduced listeners to his avant-garde musical approach.

Trading the ethereal atmosphere of ‘Durga Prayer’ for this infectious, up-tempo, groove fest, ‘Saxy Sitar’ reveals the sheer versatility of Makkuni. Immediately erupting into the compelling Sax-Sitar-Bass combination, the International phenomenon demonstrates remarkable levels of confidence, casting a cadenced structure through which each of the instruments contribute to the track’s gleaming radiance.

While the buoyant sax grooves inflict the elegance of any worthy Jazz tune, it’s the pummelling bass and intricate drumming which propels ‘Saxy Sitar’ to impressive heights. Following an explosive 4/4 groove, the track’s 7 beat cycle instigates a sense of calculated chaos, where the fluctuant rhythms infuse a real sense of exhilaration. Employed with such conviction, the track’s time signature draws parallels with some of Math-Rock’s most intriguing output, with its unique combination of instruments evoking feelings reminiscent of Foals’ debut album, ‘Antidotes’.

Rounded off with the glistening arpeggios which spiral between each groove, Makkuni ensures there remains nothing ‘conventional’ about ‘Saxy Sitar’. A futuristic take on what is already considered an experimental style of music, Makkuni’s risks are exactly what fans have grown accustomed to over at the Mahamaya Experience. With its blistering tempo, signature sitar, and emphatic grooves, ‘Saxy Sitar’ showcases every ounce of Makkuni’s musical prowess, combining his passionate Asian roots with the intoxicating bedlam of Math-Rock. A recipe you never knew you needed – until now!

Mahamaya Experience Delivers a Magnificently Sophisticated Melodious Jam
“Saxy Sitar” Featuring Ranjit Makkuni
Developing a thrilling combination of synthwave, rock, psychedelia and progressive melodies, Mahamaya Experience’s sound is at the intersection where the chill night driving elements of purely fashionable, rhythmic sounds and the motivating energy of the tempos combined with the playful nostalgia of technological audio combine. This unique collection’s sound is purely designed to exude compassion and affection as it hits the listener with a deep and reverence impact to allow them to introspect over a plethora of life’s imperative lessons.
“Saxy Sitar” is a fascinating sax bass jam over 20 minutes that fuses multiple elements over scintillating genres- its abundant features such as the saxophone and the upbeat rhythmic tempo in between coruscating beat cycles contrasts brilliantly with its rock foundation. Operating in between moments of laid-back and soothing and lively charged up and adrenaline-rushing melodicism, this is the best listening experience you can treat your ears to!
There is improvisation and of course, an immaculate balance that is struck with all elements here taking their places orderly and in turn giving out a coherent and seamless body of work that exemplifies authenticity. With the hypnotic sounds of expression rippling through your skin and senses, you are in a way challenged to set aside your egotistical view of the world and embrace different views and other people’s opinions of things- it is the visualization of that artistic freedom that allows Mahamaya Experience to flourish here and is, in turn, reflected on the world; for a world without freedom is not one worth living in- is it!
This is consummate musicianship on display and the best thing about this Mahamaya Experience is that it is open for interpretation. So you get to draw yourself in with nothing but an open heart and a hopeful spirit and let the melodies wash over you with impact and resonance.
